FROM LAT MACHINE TO CHIN UPS

In this post I’m going to explain about what to do if you can’t get chin ups. Whether you’re a client or you are in the gym doing this yourself, you might not be able to do chin ups right off the bar.
Generally we put in chin-ups on our light pulling day, so we can’t add weight to the bar. We’re running NLP on our deadlift. We can’t add three days a week because it’s getting too taxing. So what you do is you pull out that middle day, generally if you’re running a Monday-Wednesday-Friday, you’re going to pull out that Wednesday and then you’re going to supplement a light pulling whether it’s chin ups, cleans… You’re going to pull out that middle week, that Wednesday for instance, and you’re going to add a supplement some chin ups. So chin ups are very good light pulling exercise. So we’re going to add in chin ups.

WHY LIFTING SHOES ARE NOT OPTIONAL?

The right shoes are an essential tool for developing strength as they improve your relationship with the floor and allow you to train more effectively. Common features of a good shoe for strength training include a stiff, non-compressible sole, slight heel, adequate toe box, and metatarsal strap.
Starting Strength coaches always recommend weight lifting shoes for barbell training. Barbell training is a full body exercise. It depends on you standing in balance with a heavy bar either on your back, or on your shoulders, or in your hands. And balance is kind of a critical component of this thing because if you are not in balance, you cannot produce optimum amounts of force to the floor to move the bar. Squishy shoes are not conducive to maintaining balance because any slight perturbation of the position of the bar in your hands, or on your back or shoulders, is going to have to be dampened by your feet against the floor. You can’t do that if you’re wearing squishy running shoes. Squishy running shoes do not belong in barbell strength training.

USING THE LEG PRESS TO BUILD STRENGTH TO SQUAT

In this post I´m going to explain how the leg press can be used to incrementally load a new trainee to develop the leg strength needed to squat.
A leg press machine is one of the most constant features of commercial gyms all over the world. Everybody’s got a leg press machine because it allows big strong guys to move hundreds and hundreds of pounds over a short range motion, and accomplished very little in terms of accumulating leg strength. Starting Strength coaches don’t use it for that. The leg press machine at Wichita Falls Athletic Club is used for a very specific purpose. It is used for a detrained population that comes into the gym with insufficient strength to do an actual bodyweight squat. If you can’t do a bodyweight squat, we’ve got to have a way to get you to where you can. They’ve used various approaches to this before: partial squats and continually add to the range of motion at the bottom. But the most foolproof way that they have found to do this is with the use of a leg press machine.

THE GREAT LIFTER DILEMMA

One of the biggest problems lifters face, especially those pushing heavy weight, is managing their rest periods. You need to recover enough to be able to give a strong effort, but you don’t want to cool down so much that you lose that readiness. But what happens when the most primal of urges interrupts that balance? Today, we’re talking about something every serious lifter will face at somepoint: the urgent need to take a dump midworkout. You don’t want to let your rest period drag on too long, but you also don’twant to soil yourself under a heavy load. So, how do you handle it?

LEARN TO DO THE BASIC LIFTS OF THE STARTING STRENGTH PROGRAM (PART 2)

Mark Rippetoe is the author of the Starting Strength method. This strength training method is the most succesfull way to increase your strength levels, and it’s suitable for all audiences: children, adults, and seniors; men and women; and those with fitness goals or those looking to improve athletic performance. It’s important to mention that for performance athletes, this is probably the best method for improving basic strength levels during their general physical conditioning period and during their off-season.

HOW YOU SHOULD TRAIN BY ADAPTING TO THE GYM TEMPERATURE

If you are going to start training in your garage at a home gym, you’re going to be pretty much at the mercy of the elements because most people’s garages are not air conditioned and heated. If you’ve got a utility room that’s adjacent to the house and you can keep a door open to keep the temperature moderated in there, that’s wonderful. But a lot of people have got a train in a shed outside. If it’s 22°F, it’s going to be cold in the gym. If you’re inTexas and it’s August, it’s going to be 112ºF outside and probably 130ºF in the gym. So what are you going to do?

WHEN SHOULD YOU ADD OLYMPIC LIFTS TO YOUR GYM WORKOUTS?

In the Starting Strength programming we use versions of the Olympic lifts and they’re very important to the program. But a lot of people figure out a way to get out of having to do them. The reason they don’t want to do them is because they don’t know how. They haven’t figured out how to do them or their coach has not figured out how to coach them. So they just avoid them and do light deadlifts.

WHAT THINGS DO YOU NEED TO CARRY IN YOUR GYM BAG?

If you’re a serious liter, you’ve got a bag that you carry into the gym when you train that contains things that you need when you’re training. Things are obvious like your training shoes. Your belt needs to be in there. Other things that might need to be in the gym bag will be dependent on the facility in which you train. If you’re in your own garage gym you don’t have a gym bag because it’s all out there in the garage. But if you’re going to a gym to train everyday, you’re going to have some stuff int he gym bag besides your belt and your shoes that will depend on the circumstances at the gym.
